The nomination process for the General Election closes tomorrow at 12 noon. A number of local candidates have publicly declared their intention to run in recent days. Nominations opened yesterday morning with candidates having a 50-hour window to get their names on the ballot paper. If you want to run as Independent or non-party, you need to lodge a €500 cash deposit. Alternatively, you can get 30 signatures from people on the electoral register.
A number of candidates in Longford-Westmeath have declared in recent days with Margaret Alacoque Maguire of Ireland First confirming she will be running in the constituency. Independent candidates Charlotte Keenan and Donal Jackson have also confirmed they will be running along with People Before Profit's Dave Smyth. So far, there are 16 publicly declared candidates in Sligo-Leitrim, 19 in Longford-Westmeath and 10 in Roscommon-Galway. But we'll only know for certain on Monday at 12 noon, as candidates have until then to withdraw from the running if they are nominated before Saturday's deadline.
