The CEO of the North West Simon Community says the moratorium on evictions will give some much needed 'breathing space' to tenants.
Noel Daly says figures in their most recent study show there are no properties available to rent in Co Leitrim that are affordable for families who need housing assistance.
North West Simon supports families across Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal who are under threat of homelessness.
He says they've dealt with a large number of families both this year, and last year, who'd been given notice to quit, and who were facing huge difficulty in renting anything else in their area.
The Simon CEO says while the affordability issue will still be there for many people when the moratorium ends next year, they'll at least have some time to consider other options
"It's a very welcome initiative. I think we were facing into what local authorities are calling an epidemic of notices of termination in the north-west region. In 2021 we had 23 households referred to us in the whole year who had notices to quit and we currently have a similar amount referred to us in the past few months since the introduction. The moratorium gives some breathing space".
