October the 1st this year has been announced for the first day of the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest.
From October 1st, Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology will cease to exist and more than 15,000 students and 1,200 staff across the Midlands and Midwest will be teaching, learning and researching at the newly designated TUS: Midlands Midwest.
The four towns of Athlone, Clonmel, Ennis and Thurles will also become university towns for the first time on October 1st as the new university will include campuses in them.
The recruitment process has also begun for a president of Ireland's first cross-regional university.
