Aoife O’Rourke has won bronze at the 72nd Strandja Multi-nations in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Castlerea middleweight scored a unanimous victory over Demir Sennur of Turkey in a hard fought quarter-final bout on Thursday afternoon.
O’Rourke was more in control of the boxers throughout, in what was a very even contest with three of the four judges giving the opening round to the Roscommon woman.
The second round was a closer contest with only the Indian judge giving O’Rourke the nod as Sennur levelled the contest with a 49-46 round.
A one point deduction for O’Rourke early in the third round for dipping her head looked ominous for the 2019 European champion, but two effect left hooks, scored victory for the Roscommon woman.
Four of the judges all scoring victory for O’Rourke as she took the contest, 49-46, 46-49, 49-46. The Romanian judge surprisingly giving all three rounds to Sennur.
O’Rourke will now fight for silver on Friday afternoon.
