Outgoing Roscommon senator Eugene Murphy says he would consider running in the next General Elections in five years' time.
It comes following his elimination on the eighth count in the agricultural panel in the Seanad elections.
He was first elected to Roscommon County Council in 1985 and retained his seat until he was elected to the Dáil in 2016 and won a seat in the Seanad in 2020.
The Scramogue man unsuccessfully contested the general election in November, as an Independent.
Eugene Murphy's recent defeat in both the Dáil and Seanad elections ends his 40-year streak of unbroken service as a public representative.
