Over 13 million euro has been announced for major health infrastructure projects in the Shannonside region today.
The allocations are part of a one-billion-euro fund announced by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly for the construction and equipping of healthcare facilities nationwide.
Portiuncula Hospital has received the largest total amount of funding today for various projects at the Ballinasloe facility, with 9.3 million euro secured.
The long sought new 50 bed unit will benefit from the funding along with repurposing works at the hospital's outpatient ward and works to enable the installation of a new CT scanner.
The refurbishment of St Joseph's Care Centre in Longford is to get 3 million euro, with a separate €100,000 allocated towards Ashford House Mental Health Service in the town.
The planned upgrade of the care facility will see a modern 68 bed unit at the Dublin Road site.
In Roscommon, €620,000 has been announced to fund a replacement 50 bed unit for the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Previous HIQA inspections at the facility have highlighted issues with the buildings, which, in some cases, are over 100 years old.
A planning application for the upgrade was submitted to Roscommon County Council earlier this month, with a decision due in June.
