Local Sinn Fein TD's are calling on the Government to urgently ensure carers are available to those who need home support.
Latest figures released by the HSE to the party's disability and carers spokesperson and local TD, Pauline Tully, highlight that over 5,000 people are currently waiting on home support services.
Over 1,400 people in the Shannonside region are waiting for a carer to be allocated to them, despite being already approved.
CHO area two which includes counties Roscommon and Galway recorded the longest waiting list at 638 cases.
In the Longford/Westmeath area 575 people are waiting on homecare services.
While a further 208 people living in counties Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal remain without a carer due to the backlog.
The Government says factors such as employment contracts and their terms and conditions are resulting in recruitment challenges faced by the sector.
Local Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny says it's unacceptable and believes the Government must engage with private, community and voluntary homecare providers to entice staff and bring them into line with those employed directly by the HSE.
