The proposed routes for a by-pass of Carrick-on-Shannon have led to widespread concern among communities living on the outskirts of the county town and beyond

Over 150 people attended a public meeting at Annaduff Church car park regarding the controversial Carrick on Shannon to Dromod road project last night.

All six Carrick On Shannon Municipal District councillors addressed the meeting just hours after the local authority confirmed the period for the public consultation was to be extended by a further two weeks.

The meeting heard that it was vital that every local person along the route would make a submission and that more consultation between locals and the design team was required.

Organiser John Ward was pleased with the turnout and is confident "people power" can alter the project.

Meanwhile Minister of State and local TD Frank Feighan has welcomed the extension of the deadline for people to make submissions on the proposed routes.
