Local hospitals have been promised a further 153 new inpatient beds in the next seven years. The new beds are part of the national Acute Inpatient Bed Capacity Expansion plan which will bring 3,352 new beds according to the Minister for Health.
Sligo University Hospital will see 69 new beds added to their capacity on top of existing works at the facility. Midlands Regional Hospital Mullingar is to see 48 new beds, while Roscommon University Hospital will have 20 new bed spaces added.
Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe are to be provided an extra 16 beds as part of the plans. The INMO has welcomed the announcement, but says the delivery of the beds is entirely contingent on correct and safe staffing levels.
