Over 1500 people across the Shannonside region who were in receipt of the Pandemic Uneployment Payment will be paying tax back through a reduction in their tax credits.
Roscommon has the largest amount of people who had a tax underpayment between 2020 and 2021.
The PUP was a social welfare payment for anyone who was out of work due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Anyone who filed income tax returns and had an underpayment will have the outstanding amount deducted from their tax credits. According to the latest figures published by the Minister for Finance, Pascal Donoghue, 1,590 people across the 3 counties were in receipt of the payment and are paying tax back.
749 people in Roscommon are repaying tax while in Longford, 496 are paying tax back. Leitrim has the least amount of recipients at 345.
Nationally, over 75 thousand people received the PUP and had an underpayment of tax.
