Over 15,500 motorists in the Shannonside Region had penalty points on their licence at the end of last year. New data from the Central Statistics Office shows the breakdown of motorists across the country with over half a million divers having points nationwide. Penalty points are formal reprimand by Gardaí following a driving offence such as speeding, mobile phone use while driving or the non wearing of seatbelts.
When a motorist accumulates 12 penalty points on their licence in a three year period, they are automatically banned from driving for six months. Roscommon has the largest amount of drivers in the region with penalty points as of last year with 7,263 motorists with points. That's followed by Longford at 5,149 and Leitrim with a major drop of 3,232.
