Two major hospitals that serve the Shannonside region have projected a required increase in their capacity by the end of the decade.
According to analysis presented at the latest Regional Health Forum Meeting, over 100 beds will be needed by 2030
At this week's meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, CEO of the Saolta Group, Tony Canavan provided the results of a Demand and Capacity analysis of Model 3 hospitals.
The results showed that there was a need for capacity to be increased in Sligo and Portiuncula to help ease the demand on the hospitals.
By 2030, 24 beds will be needed to added to Portiuncula Hospital.
The projections show that the 24 additional beds will be in Inpatient care with a 4 bed reduction in ICU and a 7 bed reduction in Discharge.
Sligo will also require another 80 beds in inpatient care to try and ease demand along with a 12 bed increase in ICU and no increase in Natal ICU
This is offset by a 15 bed reduction in Discharge care.
A 42 bed block development is also projected to increase capacity at the hospital.
