There have been an estimated 2,000 to 2,400 excess deaths since the start of the Covid pandemic, according to new analysis.
The CSO says death notices were particularly high in April 2020 and January and February of this year.
According to the CSO, there've been around 2,500 deaths in the month of April between 2014 and 2018. But in April 2020, during the first wave of Covid, the number of death notices on RIP.ie was over 3,500.
Similarly, the number of deaths occurring in the month of February would usually be around 2,700. But during the third coronavirus surge, in February this year, there were more than 3,100 death notices posted.
The CSO analysis also shows increases in the number of notices mentioning older persons facilities as the place of death. There were 525 in December, 1,000 in January and 737 in February
