The appeals are in reference to decisions on the School Transport Scheme, which provides free school bus places to children.

Over 50 appeals have been lodged to the School Transport Appeals Board so far this year in the Shannonside region

According to figures from the Department of Education, parents and guardians in Leitrim have lodged the most appeals in the region.

The School Transport Scheme provides free school transport to primary and secondary school children. To be eligible for the scheme, primary school children need to live 3.2km or more away from their school or 4.8km or more if they're in secondary school. Over 130,000 applications were made to the scheme by the time applications closed in July of this year. Due to the high volume of applications, many were left without a place on a school bus or having their applications rejected.
