51 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence in the Shannonside Region over the Christmas period.
7405 checkpoints were conducted across the country from the first of December to the 3rd of January as part of the Garda Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign.
The operation focused on what Gardaí called the four life saver offences of drink/drug driving, speeding, use of mobile phone while driving and non-wearing of seatbelts.
The Gardaí of the Roscommon/Longford/Mayo Division arrested 23 motorists for drink driving and 15 for driving under the influence of drugs.
The total from the division is the second highest nationwide behind the Dublin Metropolitan Region West at 54.
Meanwhile, Roads Policing Units in the Sligo/Leitrim Division detected 13 drivers over the limit, with 12 having increased blood alcohol levels and 1 testing positive for drugs.
Nationally, 745 people were arrested in just over a month for intoxicated driving while a further 14,704 speeding offences were detected and 4,829 traffic collisions were reported.
