A total of 12 sites with the potential for over 500 homes have been identified in Carrick-on-Shannon.
A report has revealed they are located on both the Roscommon and Leitrim sides of the growing town.
The draft local area plan for Carrick-on-Shannon, from 2025 to 2031, went on public display yesterday and submissions can be made before October 4th.
It notes how the population of the town increased by almost 11 per cent in the space of six years, rising to 4,743 in Census 2022. Like many towns, Carrick now has a significant housing shortage.
As part of the plan currently under preparation, a settlement capacity audit was carried out by Leitrim County Council, with help from Roscommon County Council, to see what land had potential for development.
It has found there are 52 acres, on 12 different sites, on which 513 homes could be developed.
It says 141 housing units could be developed in Summerhill and 110 in Lisnagat. The other sites are located in various areas around the town, including the Castlecarra Road, Cortober, Attifinlay and Attirory.
