Over 500 marriages have taken place across the Shannonside region last year. The figures come from a recent CSO report pertaining to the amount of marriages which took place around the country. Roscommon was the county with the highest figure, at 267 registered marriages, 151 of which were Roman Catholic ceremonies, and 61 out of the total number were registered as civil marriages.
Meanwhile, a total of 180 marriages were registered in Leitrim. Of these, 116 wedding masses were performed, and only 31 were civil marriages. Longford was the county with the lowest registered marriages in the country, at only 122, with 77 Roman Catholic ceremonies and 40 civil marriages. Overall, 569 couples tied the knot in the Shannonside region, a decrease of 14% since last year's figures. A total of 20,513 marriages across the nation were reported by the CSO.
