Over 500 people have signed a petition objecting to the construction of modular housing for refugees at the Longford Greyhound Stadium.
Local independent Councillor Gerry Warnock began the petition late last week following word that the Office of Public Works has identified three potential sites locally, with a recent meeting of Longford County Council informed the greyhound site is the preferred option.
The site has been earmarked for the creation of a skatepark and mini harbour connecting to the Royal Canal, with calls also made to include sporting amenities on site such as soccer pitches.
Councillor Warnock along with other town bases councillors are urging the OPW to use another location such as the former Connolly Barracks in the town.
He believes the Greyhound Stadium site should be used as a non-residential recreational zone for the community.
