Over a third of Leitrim's local elections candidates are women

A total of 35 candidates are set to contest the vote on June 7th.

Over 37 per cent of the candidates who will contest the local elections in Co Leitrim are women.

A total of 35 candidates are set to contest the vote on June 7th.

At present, there are three female councillors in Leitrim - Mary Bohan, Finola Armstrong McGuire and Ita Reynolds Flynn - and 15 men.

It can now be confirmed that 35 names will be on the ballot papers for the local elections in Co Leitrim on June 7th.

There will be 11 in Ballinamore local electoral area, 12 in both Carrick-on-Shannon and Manorhamilton.

A total of 18 seats will be up for grabs.

Across the three LEAs, there are 13 women and 22 men.

Six long-serving councillors are standing down and won't be seeking re-election.

Four of the six existing Fine Gael councillors are quitting - Finola Armstrong McGuire, Thomas Mulligan, Frank Dolan and Sean McDermott, along with Fianna Fáil's Caillian Ellis and Independent Gerry Dolan.
