Over €1.2 million has been awarded to local animal welfare organisations by the Department of Agriculture this week. 101 animal welfare charities across the country are in line for funding of €6 million including eight locally based organisations. The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have received the highest amount locally for their Headquarters in Longford, with over €900,000 allocated to the nationwide charity. The centre outside of Keenagh is a base for the ISPCA's work across the country in investigating animal cruelty, rehabilitating animals and rehoming them. Hungry Horse Outside, based near Newtownforbes in Longford was awarded the next highest allocation at €140,250, while Longford SPCA were allocated €7,000.
In Roscommon, the local SPCA received Close to €50,000 towards their operations, while Fairyglen Animal Sanctuary in Arigna saw Department of Agriculture funding of almost €20,000. TNR South Roscommon got €12,600 and Animal Health Ireland based in Ballinasloe were awarded €4,000. Leitrim's Animal Welfare Society was the only successful awardee in the county, with €39,400 ring fenced for the charity.
