The Mid Shannon Wilderness greenway is a joint project between Longford Council and Bord Na Mona and its hoped that a park covering hundreds of hectares could eventually be developed across the bogland

Over €1 million euro has been allocated this week to fund a 15 kilometre section of the Mid Shannon Wilderness greenway in Longford.

A 6 kilometre section of the walk has already been finished in recent months around the Corlea centre in Kenagh.

The ultimate aim is to create a 80 kilometre link between the new and existing greenways around Lanesboro, Kenagh, Longford and Clondra.

The route will have five link points to the Royal Canal and it will also involve the repurposing of the old Bord Na Mona bridge across the Shannon at Kilnacarrow outside Lanesboro.

The project involves a partnership between Longford County Council and Bord Na Mona and some former employees are working on the building of the new route across the bog.

Local Fianna Fail Deputy Joe Flaherty says the greenway will be a key tool for the county as it seeks to establish itself as an outdoors and recreational destination.
