Over €30,000 has been announced to fund 87 local organisations in providing physical activity for older people.
The Active National Grant from Age & Opportunity is designed to support groups helping older people who want to get more involved in arts and culture, sport and physical activity.
The money is part of a national grant of €317,430 being awarded to 909 organisations, ranging from active retirement groups to sports clubs and day care centres.
€15,820 is to benifit 43 groups such as the Mayflower Community Centre, Drumshanbo Community Sports Hub and St. Patrick's Community Hospital.
26 groups in Roscommon including several local ICA groups, active retirement clubs and community organisations are to share a fund of €9,650.
While in Longford, €5,540 is to be awarded between 18 groups including Lanesboro Triathlon Club, Longford Mothers Union and various local ICA committees.
According to Age & Opportunity, financially supporting organisations to buy equipment and host courses for older people helps them reap the health benefits of being active.
