The government has approved over 9 million euro for the public realm scheme for Roscommon town.
The application made by Roscommon County Council in collaboration with the Town Team and the Chamber of Commerce has been successful under the Urban Regeneration Fund.
It's to provide a revised traffic layout at Main Street and the Square, new wider granite footpaths on Main Street, upgraded links to carparks and lighting, as well as new shared spaces.
Work began on the project this week on Goff street and it will progress through to Main St & the Square over the next 12 months.
The confirmation of funding has been welcomed by Senator Eugene Murphy and his Seanad colleague Aisling Dolan says the future works will increase footfall back into the town and help revitalise the economy:
The areas that will be improved include:
• Spoke 1 – creation of a Civic Square, linking the new Linear Park on Circular Road to the Market Square and Main Street Commercial Hub
• Spoke 2 - activating backlands of Main Street through pedestrian links for town centre living
• Spoke 3 - development of opportunities for social infrastructure in the brownfield sites of Henry Street and Church Street
• Spoke 4 - creation of pedestrian and cycle routes to create a low-carbon transport county town
