The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that thirty-three inmates at Castlerea prison have now tested positive for Covid-19.
The outbreak is in the A division of the prison.
The Irish Prison Service is currently managing 3 active outbreaks of Covid-19 across the prison estate including one in the west Roscommon facility.
Following testing over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of February, last week, a total of 27 prisoners tested positive for the virus.
The Irish prison service has confirmed that an Outbreak Control Team has been established and the A Division has completed a first round of testing on Tuesday 15th February.
A statement issued to Shannonside Northern Sound this morning has now confirmed a total of 33 positive cases and as a result of the high detection rate, the second round of testing is scheduled for Tuesday 22nd February.
The IPS has also confirmed that a restricted regime is in place for the A Division until all test results have been returned.
The other outbreaks of COVID at present are at Cloverhill and Mountjoy prisons.
