A special event takes place this week in Athlone.

A Roscommon mother says it is vital more supports are put in place for parents of children with heart issues.

The first Heart Family Fridays event take place later this week in Athlone to support parents of children born with congenital heart disease.

Over 500 children every year in Ireland are born with the issue, with the event being organised by the charity, heartchildren.ie.

Strokestown woman Fiona Fallon has two children with CHD and spent time in the hospital herself as a four-year-old receiving treatment in Crumlin for her own childhood cardiac issues

She says the event in the Radisson Blu between 10 and 12pm next Friday is a great chance for parents to get some extra support and advice
