Campervan users holidaying in Carrick-on-Shannon are being urged to consider wheelchair users and pedestrians when parking their vehicles.
Leitrim County Council say while there’s no dedicated area for motorhomes in the town they ask the drivers of the vehicles to be mindful and respectful of other road users.
It comes following a number of complaints that campervans were blocking access to footpaths, bins and wheelchair bays.
In a statement the local authority say they welcome all visitors to Carrick-on-Shannon and wish for the town to be accessible and enjoyed by everyone.
Carrick on Shannon Tidy Towns who raised the issue on social media are asking the owners of the motorhomes to avoid parking in front of bins and waste disposal areas.
Jannette Bryne is Services Co-Ordinator at Sligo Leitrim Wheelchair Association she says when access to footpaths is blocked it has a major impact on wheelchair users.
''We've got a couple of phone calls ourselves in terms of the camper vans and that kind of thing. And I suppose it's a little bit more prominent these days due to the good weather and everybody's getting out but it's when people park up on footpaths or in terms camper vans sometimes it's the back of them they're just a little bit longer and they just don't realise I suppose the impact that it does have but I suppose with a wheelchair user if you can imagine they have to get down off the footpath at the nearest slope, go out onto the road, you know, go fairly quickly that a car won't come.''
