Pet owners warned of toxic algae blooms on local waterways

Despite rapid emergency vet treatment, Rooney the 13-week old labrador died following exposure to the algae.

Pet owners are being warned to be vigilant when walking dogs near the local waterways over fears of toxic algae.

One local woman has highlighted the danger that resulted in the death of her dog and left another dog very ill.

The incident took place at Cavetown Lake in Roscommon over the weekend which is currently suffering from the algae bloom.

The algae developes on water sources in warmer weather and is usually the result of pollution in the wear.

The toxins can be ingested by the animal while swimming or by cleaning themselves after they leave the water.

It's described as a 'pea green' layer lying on top of the water.

Pet owner Tracy lost her dog  Rooney due to the algae over the weekend.

She's urging local authorities to do put signage up on waterways across the region:
