A petition highlighting public opposition to the installation of modular housing at the former Longford Greyhound Stadium has reached its goal of 1,000 signatures.
The site on the Park Road in the town has been identified by the OPW as site as a possible location for housing for those fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The track was purchased by the council at the beginning of 2022, with a proposed Skate Park and mini harbour earmarked for the land.
Elected representatives have acknowledged that while there's a need to provide accommodation to refugees, they claim the greyhound stadium must be left as a recreational amenity as outlined in the county development plan.
1,057 people have now signed the online petition, with a further 200 having signed an in person book located at Torc Cafe on New Street according to Gerry Warnock.
A public meeting will be held this evening in the Red Room at PVs in Longford Town from 8PM to discuss the issue.
