A long-awaited planning application for the restoration of the historical Officer's Building at Longford's Connolly Barracks has been submitted. The part 8 planning permission is being sought by Longford County Council for the building to be turned into multi purposed community facility. Longford museum, a visual arts space and a welcome centre are just some of the ideas put forward by the Longford public for the future of the historic Connolly Barracks building. The barracks was de-activated in 2009 and the 4th Cavalry stationed there were transferred to Athlone, with the facility remaining largely derelict over the past 15 years.
Longford County Council are seeking THRIVE funding of over €7 million for the regeneration of the building with a focus on community and the arts. Local Councillor Peggy Nolan says that the regeneration of the Barracks could see a domino effect rejuvenation of that side of town.
