It's hoped that Longford will become a centre of excellence for the development of new sporting talent.
That's the belief of the Vice Chair of the Longford Athletics club following the submission of a planning application for the construction of a new 400 metre running track on the grounds of St. Mel's College
Plans include the I.A.A.F approved synthetic track, ancillary surface sports facilities and a grass infield area.
Speaking to Let's Talk, John Fitzpatrick says a range of top class new sporting infrastructure has been developed in the town recently with further plans on the horizon.
The club chair says that the athletic facility, the planned skate park and the proposed running track will put Longford on the map:
'Having facilities like these enhances the possibility of bringing out more talent, and we know Longford has a lot of sport and good talent. Youths are attracted to this type of facility, especially the skate park.
Longford COCO should be really proud of this amazing facility that will be well looked after.
Longford is in a great place at the moment. Growing up in Longford now is different from twenty or thirty years ago.'
