Planning permission has been granted for the construction of a sizable solar energy farm in Roscommon.
Renewable Energy Systems Ltd were successful in securing permission for the 77.7 hectare development at Cuilmore and Cloonrollagh near Athlone.
The application sought over 77 hectares of photovoltaic panels mounted on support structures, a single story substation building, inverter substations and internal access tracks.
Several security measures are also included in the permission such as a CCTV systems and security fencing on site.
The permission has been granted by Roscommon County Council for a period of 35 years with 23 conditions attached.
These include a development contribution of €270,000 and an order that the converters, containers and fencing should be dark green in colour.
