Planning permission has been approved for a major new student housing complex in Athlone.
The 'Green Quarter' will see 122 residential units as well as a major student accommodation complex of 283 units based at Cartrontroy, Kilnafaddoge, Ardnaglug and the Lissywollen townlands.
Avenir Homes Limited lodged planning through the Strategic Housing Development process of An Bord Pleanala in August of last year.
The development will include 65 houses and 62 apartments as well as 46 student apartments comprising of 283 student bedspace accommodation and a creche and associated site works.
As part of the SHD system, Athlone Councillors met in February this year to give their input to Westmeath County Council's submission on the plans.
While welcoming the development in an effort to ease housing pressures in the town, opposition to the plans was also voiced - including fears the accommodation blocks would be too high and the impact on a nearby greenway.
This morning it has been confirmed that the plans, submitted by Longford-based architect Mark Cunningham, have been given the green light subject to a total of 28 conditions.
