Planning permission has been upheld for a massive Athlone housing development following an appeal against it. Marina Quarter Ltd had been given the go ahead for the construction of 177 residential units at Cornamaddy in May of this year. The development will consist of 71 three bed houses, 65 two bed homes, and 24 four bed maisonette apartment units along side a small number of other designs. The large-scale development includes all associated development works and will form part of a larger development on an 18-acre site.
An appeal was lodged against the plans highlighting issues over expiration of a relevant Athlone Development Plan, the un-zoned nature of the land and the density of the project. The planning inspector responded to the concerns over the lack of a new Athlone Development Plan, stating that it was clear that the 2014 to 2020 plan contained a provision that it 'shall continue to have effect' after 2020. Following the receipt of further information, the number of homes on site were reduced to 169. An Bord Pleanála upheld the planning permission and issued a number of revised conditions.
