Planning upheld for new Athlone housing development following appeal

An Bord Pleanála has now upheld the decision of Westmeath County Council and granted permission with 23 revised conditions.

Planning permission has been upheld for a significant new housing development in Athlone following an appeal. Mistledale Limited had been granted planning permission for the development in Coosan by Westmeath County Planners in July 2024.

The plans would see the construction of 67 homes at Hillquarter comprising of four 4-bed two storey dwellings, 28 four-bed two storey homes, 30 three bed houses and five two-bed terraced dwellings. Plans also included the upgrading of the existing public sewer, new waste water connections and a new site entrance from the public road.

According to the application, the development would see internal roads, paths, paving and parking, along with bin stores, a public amenity space and street lighting. The development was subject to a number of submissions from locals who objected the plans.

These issues included concerns over traffic levels, road safety and surface water drainage. An Bord Pleanála has now upheld the decision of Westmeath County Council and granted permission with 23 revised conditions.
