Councillors in Roscommon have approved plans to develop a covered section of the newly redeveloped town square.
The monthly meeting of Roscommon Municipal District approved the Part 8 planning application earlier this week for the covered civic space in the area of the square north of the Bank of Ireland.
It's also hoped to develop a covering to the historic well incorporating a model display in the area of the South Square.
The historic well, with a depth of approximately 14m, was uncovered during the Phase 1 paving works between the Bank of Ireland building and Hayden Monument and it's hoped to fully light it to make it a visual attraction on the square.
The covering marks the final part of the overall plan to regenerate Roscommon town centre which included significant remodelling works on Main Street and at the Market Square.
It's understood the project will now go to tender with hopes work could begin before the end of the year or early in 2023.
