Planning approval for the construction of a battery energy storage system at Lough Allen in north Roscommon has been appealed to the higher planning authority.
Arigna LDES Limited were granted permission for the development in Arigna last month.
The plans include the development of 56 battery containers, the construction of a new single storey IPP building, along with new internal access roads, drainage and security fencing.
The application had been approved by Roscommon county planners in November, with 19 conditions attached, including the development of an updated Emergency Response Plan in case of a fire or explosion on site.
The permission had been the subject of a number of objections from locals, with the Lough Allen Conservation Association lodging an appeal this week with An Bord Pleanála.
The group has highlighted concerns with what it says is a lack of safeguards for the public, the effect the storage system may have on the environment and the visual amenity in the area.
The higher planning authority is due to decide on the issue in April next year.
