The days of plastic or paper driving licences may be coming to an end.
Today the European Commission presented proposals to introduce digital driving licences that would be valid throughout Europe.
The aim of the new system is to reduce costs and barriers for individuals as they move between EU states.
EU transport commissioner, Adina Valean, outlines how it would work.
'One of the directives adopted today will make the small piece of plastic history.
In the not so distant future your drivers licence will be on your phone or any other digital device , although you will be able to request a physical version if you prefer.'
