The plight of a family of eight from Ballinasloe forced to live in a one-bedroom caravan since February has been described as 'an emergency situation' by a local Senator.
Martin and Margaret Corcoran had been renting an apartment for 15 years but were left homeless when their landlord sold the property last year. Martin Corcoran says the caravan has no heating, electricity or running water and the recent cold snap has made life extremely difficult for his children. The family have issued a renewed appeal to Galway County Council to provide them and their six children with a house. However, due to housing legislation, the local authority says it can only place the family in a five-bedroom house due to the number and gender of their children, but no such house is available.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Senator Eugene Murphy has urged the family to get in touch with his office.
