They’re rising by 5 per cent, in the first increase in the county in over 15 years.

A Roscommon councillor is defending the decision to increase commercial rates in Co Roscommon next year.

They’re rising by 5 per cent, in the first increase in the county in over 15 years.

Councillors backed the plan by 13 votes to four at Roscommon County Council’s budget meeting yesterday.

Independent councillor Tom Crosby supported the increase and he explained why to our reporter Eoghan Murphy.

The four councillors who opposed the increase were Sinn Fein’s Leah Cull and Independents Anthony Wardron, Tony Ward and Nigel Dineen.

Councillor Dineen explained why to Eoghan.
