A book of condolences opened at Roscommon County Council’s headquarters at 11 o’clock this morning and several people have signed it over the past two hours.

People have been arriving at Roscommon County Council’s headquarters today to pay their respects to Fine Gael councillor John Naughten.

He has represented south Roscommon on the council for over 20 years and was recently chosen to run for Fine Gael in the general election in Roscommon-Galway.

He died at his home in Drum on Friday, in what is being treated as a personal tragedy.

A book of condolences opened at Roscommon County Council’s headquarters at 11 o’clock this morning.

A similar book is available for the public to sign at the council's Athlone area office in Monksland.

Our reporter Eoghan Murphy has been speaking to some of his friends and council colleagues. He first spoke to Independent Laurence Fallon, a long-time friend of his – he spoke out how he first met John many decades ago.
