A well known local care home has announced they are to close their doors from next year.
Costello's Care Centre in Lanesboro provides accommodation for up to 28 residents with needs ranging from low dependency to maximum dependency nursing care.
The family run centre managed by Sarah and Shay Costello have confirmed that they will not apply for re Registration to operate as a Nursing home with HIQA.
In a statement to Shannonside FM news, management say the cost of providing their quality service has become far in excess of their income.
According to the centre, their income is set by the National Treatment Purchase Fund through the Fair Deal Scheme, with management and Nursing Homes Ireland unsuccessfully negotiating with the NTPF over further supports.
The care centre had been praised by a recent HIQA inspectors report for the relationships between staff and residents at the Roscommon home.
Management at the Lanesboro care home say they are now working with residents and families to find suitable accommodation for current clients.
Statement from Costello's Care Centre:
We regret to announce that we are not applying for re Registration to operate as a Nursing home with HIQA and we will be ceasing to operate
This decision is heart-breaking for us and has been reached only after exploring every avenue
Our outgoings to provide a quality service are far in excess of our income. Our income is set by the National Treatment Purchase Fund through the Fair Deal Scheme. We have asked them for immediate assistance but this has not been granted. Our representative body Nursing Homes Ireland has been trying to negotiate with the NTPF with no success.
In spite of our recent very positive HIQA report , we have reached the end of the road. We do not have the resources to continue to provide safe quality care into the future.
We feel that we had developed something special in our small, family run facility and we are immensely proud of our great team of staff in every area nurses, carers, catering, household, administration and maintenance.
Sadly, a number of smaller family run Nursing Homes have closed their doors already this year.
We are working with all residents and their families finding suitable alternative accommodation and many of our excellent staff will take up employment in these facilities too
We wish to respect the privacy and dignity of our residents at this difficult time
