Population of Western region increases by almost 35% since 1996

The report shows that the population in Leitrim grew by 40.5% from 1996 to 2022 whilst Roscommon saw an increase of 35.2% in the same period.

A new report has revealed that the population of the Western region has increased by almost 35% since 1996. The Western Development Commission is celebrating it's 25th anniversary and has published a report looking at changes between 1996 to 2022. The Western Development commission have been looking at the Census from all counties in Connacht, Donegal and Clare. The report shows that the population in Leitrim grew by 40.5% from 1996 to 2022 whilst Roscommon saw an increase of 35.2% in the same period.

The report has also found that Roscommon is one of only six counties in Ireland where there are more males than females. The national figure according to Census 2022 is 50.55% with Roscommon just below that with 49.9%. The WDC also took a look at diversity with Ballaghaderreen being the second most diverse town in the Western region having at least 27% of its population being a citizen of a country other than Ireland. Meanwhile, Roscommon Town having at least 23% non-Irish citizens whilst Carrick on Shannon have 19.2% according to Census 2022.
