The return of the town councils as suggested in the programme for Government, is being welcomed by people in the Shannonside Region.
The council's, which focuses on towns and their issues, needs and problems, were abolished in 2014 as a cost saving method.
Many urban Councillors in the region have long critcised the move and called for them to be re-instated.
The programme for Government states that they will, on a regional and phased basis, establish town councils to provide a focal point for raising concerns and coordinating town focused activities.
Former Longford Councillor Gerry Warnock previously branded the abolition of the councils as 'political vandalism'.
