A major Garda investigation is underway into the death of a Roscommon man at a house in Sligo.
The body of 41-year-old auctioneer Aidan Moffitt, from Lisacul near Ballaghaderreen was discovered with serious injuries at his home last night.
A technical examination is still being carried out at the house of the auctioneer and political activist whose body was found in 'unexplained' circumstances at his home last night.
Gardaí say the results of a post-mortem will determine the course of their investigation - but it's believed the Fine Gael activist suffered severe injuries.
It's understood he had only recently returned from holidays abroad and was out socialising in a local pub at the weekend.
Prayers have been offered for the dead man at masses today in Sligo and in Roscommon.
It's believed an incident room has been established at Sligo garda station into the unexplained death and a post mortem, to be carried out by the State Pathologist this evening will determine the next steps in the Garda investigation.
He was a well-known activist for Fine Gael and Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan says he is totally shocked by his death:
"He was very involved in the Fine Gael party and was very loyal. He was very very good at his job and everyone who knew him had great respect and great like for him. He and his family are so well regarded in west Roscommon and further afield and again, this is a huge shock in a community that is simply isn't used to acts like this and again, the people are numbed, they are saddened."
Mayor of Sligo Arthur Gibbons lives in the Carton Heights estate just a few doors away from where Mr Moffitt's body was discovered.
He has issued this appeal for anyone with information on his death to come forward :
"The Gardai are doing door to door investigations and what I would ask, especially anyone that would have been in the area on Monday evening, in the Sligo area, and if they saw anything that was suspicious, or anywhere around Rosses Point road to the entrance to Cartron Heights, that local area, if they could please contact Gardai because the gardai can't do their job unless people come forward if what they saw that may be helpful."
