The levy has proved controversial since it was announced in the Budget.

A Roscommon TD believes quarries which sold defective blocks should be held accountable for the mica redress scheme.

Michael Fitzmaurice's comments come as the Government rowed back on the concrete levy this week from 10 percent to five.

The Independent deputy says the measure which was was announced in Budget 2023 has left a sour taste for famers and young couples.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show he believes there needs to be regulation on products going out in future.

''I don't see why the quarries that give out these defective blocks should be let away scot free. At the moment while we are doing, the 32 million is going to be Joe, or Paddy the farmer that building a slatted tank that knows nothing about the houses in Donegal or the young couples that's trying to build a house at the moment. What we need to do is make sure that the regulation on the products that go out from now on is right.''
