There’s been substantial progress on the proposals for the design and layout of a new hospice centre in Athlone.
South Westmeath Hospice secured the support of former Chief Officer for Community Care, Pat Bennet to develop a design that would secure a distinct four bed unit within the design of the Community Nursing Centre in Clonbrusk.
The hospice group has engaged engineer Johnny Duncan to work with HSE estates on the plans, with just one issue of a separate entrance outstanding.
Spokesperson for the South Westmeath Hospice Joe Whelan says that issue is now with the HSE’s national office.
Meanwhile, Boyle native Mike Smith has taken over as Chairperson of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
Mr Smith, who has been a member of the board of directors for a number of years, takes over from Joanne Hynes as Chairperson.
The hospice is currently in the planning stages of a 5-year strategic plan with the opening of the Roscommon Hospice set to be a major milestone in July 2021.
