A protest by a group of local business people delayed the start of a trial pedestrianisation of Carrick on Shannon town centre by almost 3 hours tonight.
Just over half a dozen people prevented the erection of bollards at 6pm by the Council, resulting in a subsequent stand off
Gardai were called and negotiations then began between the protesters and the Council with a resolution agreed just before 9pm.
The protest was called off after the local authority agreed to postpone entertainment planned for Saturday in the town and the protesters stood down.
The group also hope that they will be able to engage with the Council over concerns regarding the car free zone plan in the coming days.
The pilot plan will see the Main Street pedestrianised from 6pm on Friday until 8am on Monday from this weekend until late September.
