A small crowd attended a peaceful protest in Castlerea last night following confirmation that International Protection applicants would be accommodated at an apartment complex in the town.
Those in attendance expressed anger with what they said was a lack of consultation with local residents and public representatives.
Around 50 people attended a peaceful protest in Castlerea last night after the Department of Integration confirmed plans to accommodate International Protection applicants at the Riverwalk Apartment complex in the town.
The Department of Integration said talks with the property owners were now at an advanced stage amid recent local speculation that 52 International Protection applicants would be housed there.
One of the organisers of last night’s protest, Vincent Beirne, told Shannonside News that the group ‘Castlerea Says No’ are willing to blockade the site. A further protest is planned this Sunday afternoon while local Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice called for Minister Roderic O’Gorman and IPAS to meet with local Oireachtas members and other public representatives.
