It's planned the power station will be demolished to make way for renewable energy infrastructure

Public consultation will begin next week on the demolition of Lough Ree Powerstation and the next use of the Lanesboro site.

It's planned that the land will be used for battery storage systems as a part of nationwide efforts to move towards cleaner energy.

The ESB has begun the process of submitting planning applications this week.

The plant shut a week before Christmas 2020 as part of Just Transition plans for the region.

The proposed works are designed to enable the development of grid services to support decarbonisation of the national grid as part of new nationwide climate measures.

ESB will apply to Longford County Council for permission to demolish the former station along the banks of the Shannon.
