The Assistant Arts Officer at Longford Council says the piano at Longford shopping centre offers a chance for people from different cultures to interact.
Shane Crossan was speaking following the unveiling of the instrument in Longford Town this week.
The piano was commissioned by Longford Arts Council and decorated by local artist Phil Atkinson.
He says the piano's location provides a chance for anyone to play music, regardless of their age or nationality.
We have so many new people that have come from different countries and a lot of them piano is their kind of national instrument, especially over in places like Poland, Ukraine, Russia and places like that.
So, you know, we have an awful lot of players and they just don't get a chance to perform. And, you know, like a piano in a public space, like the shopping center is a public performance and performance is the lifeblood of musicians. It's a wonderful thing. It's a really positive thing.
